CMS to mail MIPS Participation Status Letter

April 26th, 2017

On April 25, 2017 CMS published their anticipated notice describing how MIPS Eligible Clinicians will be notified of their participation status. The "MIPS Participation Status Letter" states:

The Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services is reviewing claims and letting practices know which clinicians need to take part in MIPS, the Merit-based Incentive Payment System. MIPS is an important part of the new Quality Payment Program. In late April through May, practices will get a letter from the Medicare Administrative Contractor that processes Medicare Part B claims. This letter will tell the participation status of each MIPS clinician associated with the Taxpayer Identification Number or TIN in a practice.

CMS is analyzing claims data for the date range of 9/1/2015 through 8/31/2016 to come up with their conclusion as to whether a provider needs to take part in MIPS or not. A second claims analysis will be performed on services between 91/2016 through 8/31/2017 to identify additional providers who may meet the definition of a low volume provider, non-patient facing provider, or hospital based provider.

Practice Managers should be on the look out for this very important letter from Medicare. As always, Practice Alternatives is here to answer any questions.
